World’s largest offshore wind project continues to grow

A new phase of the Dogger Bank Wind Farm project is being considered by the developers. This ‘Phase D’ would bring the farm’s generating capacity to almost 5GW.

According to Offshore Wind, site surveys have begun at a site close to the existing farms. Offshore works on the three existing phases of the project: A, B and C, began earlier this year, while onshore works began in 2020. Each of the phases was designed with an installed capacity of 1.2GW.

Dogger Bank is a shallow region of the North Sea about 100km off the east coast of England. It is thought to be the remains of part of the land bridge called Doggerland that once existed between Great Britain and mainland Europe, now vanished due to rising sea levels and a possible tsunami 8,000 years ago.

The Dogger Bank project has been developed by Equinor and SSE Renewables. It makes use of Haliade-X offshore wind turbines produced by General Electric Renewable Energy. The turbines each provide 14MW of power, stand 260m high and have a 220m rotor diameter – with each blade measuring 107m.
