The use of metal 3D printing in a remote, challenging environment has been demonstrated by the Australian army. The trial was intended to test whether the industrial equipment could be deployed in a harsh environment and be handled roughly.
The printer was a WarpSPEE3D model produced by the SPEE3D manufacturer. the printer is capable of printing large metal parts up to 40kg at a record-breaking speed of 100grams per minute.
SPEE3D printers make metal parts through ‘metal cold spray technology’ to produce industrial quality metal parts in a few minutes. This process harnesses the power of kinetic energy, rather than relying on high-power lasers and expensive gasses, allowing 3D metal printing in the field, at relatively low costs.
During the trial the printer had to be moved, unpacked in 30 minutes, print a variety of parts, then move again.
Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Kane Wright, said, “The ability to print repair parts in an environment like this has the potential to significantly reduce our footprint and repair damaged equipment – on the spot – to get us back to our main priority.”
