World’s first hydrogen powered urban train

According to reports from Chinese media a world’s first urban hydrogen powered train has been produced through a joint venture between Changchun Railway Company and Chengdu Rail Transit.

The train is built using the same core as the Fuxing train that when it began operation in 2017 was one of the world’s fastest trains reaching speeds of 350 km/h.

It is expected the hydrogen train will be able to reach speeds of 160 km/h and Chinese media reports say the train will have a 600km battery life.

China has made big investments into the hydrogen power industry. By 2025 there is expected to be 50,000 hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles on the roads. In June of 2022 China had 270 hydrogen refuelling stations. Hydrogen energy production n will reach between 100,000 and 200,000 metric tons by 2025.
