UK carbon capture plant given approval

The UK government has granted development consent for plans to build 910MW gas turbine power station with the UK’s first carbon capture and storage plant on site.

The total investment into the scheme is £2.2 billion. The consortium in charge of the project will deliver a detailed proposal of the plant in the next 12 months.

The plant is expected to be completed in 2027 and the Keadby 3 carbon removal plant is expected to be capable of removing 1.5 million tonnes of carbon for the atmosphere, which amounts to around 5% of the UK’s total emissions.

The aim is to scale up the carbon capture capabilities to make the plant the first carbon negative power station by 2030.

The plant will also be hooked up to the shared CO2 and hydrogen pipelines being developed as part of the Zero Carbon Humber and East Coast Cluster projects.
