Euro NCAP results favour electric and hybrid vehicles

The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has now released its third instalment of safety results in 2022. The highest ratings were dominated by electric or hybrid vehicles

The four areas the ratings are based on are:

  • Adult Occupant Protection (driver and passengers)
  • Child Occupant Protection
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection (formally Pedestrian Protection, now includes cyclists)
  • Safety Assist (such as driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies)

All nine cars that achieved five stars, rated 60% or above in each of the four categories, with more ratings being in the 80-89% range than any other, and second most in the 90+% range. Comparatively, the cars rating with four stars also have most ratings between 80% and 89%, but have none in the 90+% range, with the second highest range being 60-96%.

The majority of five star rated cars are a form of hybrid or pure electric. Some notable inclusions in this are the Volvo C40 Recharge, the Renault Megane E-Tech and the VW Multivan. The Vovlo C40 topping the charts on overall assistance technology.

Some of these models have even achieved Euro NCAP Awards, with the Mercedes-Benz Car-to-X Communication system being awarded with a Euro NCAP Advanced reward. This optional extra service makes use of a cloud-based service to access data from other vehicles, providing early warning of potential hazards.
