Scientists produce sensor that can withstand radiation stresses

A team of scientists have created a fiber sensor that is able to tolerate the strains of radiation and intense heat.

According to an article via New Atlas, the team from Oxford University believe that this sensor could be put to good use within nuclear fusion reactors.

The sensor comprises of strands made out of sapphire and measures at just under half an inch long.

“These sapphire optical fibers will have many different potential applications within the extreme environments of a fusion energy power plant,” said Rob Skilton, who is from the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). 

“This technology has the potential to significantly increase the capabilities of future sensor and robotic maintenance systems in this sector, helping UKAEA in its mission to deliver safe, sustainable, low carbon fusion power to the grid.” 

In the future, Oxford University believe that the length of these sensors could be increased to be used in the jet engines of airplanes to enable temperature measurements, as well as nuclear fusion reactors. This would allow modifications to be made mid-journey to improve a flight’s performance.

“This is exciting news and yet another important scientific achievement resulting from our long-standing partnership with Oxford University,” said Mark Jefferies, Chief of University Research Liaison at Rolls-Royce. 

“This fundamental research could in time enable more efficient and accurate multi-point temperature measurement in harsh environments, improving control, efficiency, and safety. We look forward to working with the University of Oxford to explore its potential.”
