India launches three satellites in first space mission of the year

India’s first space mission of 2022 was a success. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C52 blasted off on 14 February and injected an Earth Observation Satellite intro a sun synchronous polar orbit.

The main satellite, EOS-04 will provide radar imaging of weather conditions to assist with agriculture, forestry, soil science and flood mapping. It masses in at 1,710kg and was designed to have a mission life of 10 years.

The rocket also launched a satellite as part of a student project, and a technology demonstrator satellite which is a precursor to the India-Bhutan Joint Satellite

The launch was the 80th mission from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota island, off the coast of Andhra Pradesh in eastern India.
