New Satellite Network to be Released Into Low-Earth Orbit

Inmarsat is set to release a network of approximately 150 satellites into low-Earth orbit (LEO) to augment its current telecommunication services that include data links to ships at sea.

According to an article on BBC News, the UK-based satellite communications company is calling this particular mission “Orchestra”.

“An orchestra brings different instruments together, each supporting the other and playing its role in the masterpiece. We’re building Orchestra on the same concept,” says Rajeev Suri, CEO of Inmarsat.

“By combining the distinct qualities of (Geostationary Orbit) GEO, LEO and 5G into a single network, we will deliver a service that is far greater than the sum of its parts. Our customers will benefit from dramatically expanded high-throughput services around the world.”

This network looks set to begin operations in a latter half of the decade. With this project, they are looking to focus on their ongoing relationships with maritime and aviation sectors to name a few.
