A German air taxi firm has plans to build a hub for their aircraft in Florida by 2025.

Lilium, who were founded in 2015 and are based in Munich, are a flying taxi startup. According to an article on The Engineer, the company have outlined plans to build a ‘vertiport’ in Lake Nona located in the southeast of Orlando – a hub that will be able to transport Floridians via electric taxis to areas such as Jacksonville in the north of the state, to more southern locales such as West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.

This is a project that is in development with a primary real estate developer, Tavistock Development Company.

As for the aircraft, Lilium’s electric air taxi – labelled as the Lilium jet – has five seats with 36 electric jet engines. 24 of the engines are located in the main wings, whilst the other 12 are situated in a smaller set of wings housed at the front of the plane.

“We are thrilled to partner with Tavistock and build the first stretch of Florida’s high-speed electric transportation network with Central Florida at its core,” said Dr Remo Gerber, who is the COO at Lilium.

“It shows that regional high-speed air mobility can be built by private initiative and give communities such as Lake Nona, which can also serve Orlando and arrivals from its international airport, the ability to determine themselves whether they want a link into a high-speed transportation network.”
