Engineering Matters is five years old, here is your favourite episode

Five years after starting the award winning Engineering Matters podcast, parent company Reby Media has announced the most listened to episode of all time. Positioning Satellites in New Space is officially the production’s most popular episode amassing over 85,000 listens.

Made in partnership with global geodata company Fugro the episode explores how to prevent satellite collisions in low earth orbit and prevent a doomsday scenario known as Kessler Syndrome.  With satellites in low earth orbit travelling at 25,000km/hr a collision would be catastrophic creating what Tyler Jones of the Norwegian Space Agency describes in the episode as a cloud of hypersonic bullets. Fortunately the podcast also reveals that new technologies are being developed that enable organisations to know precisely where their assets are in real time to protect against collisions and enable new applications for Earth monitoring.

“The success of Engineering Matters is being able to turn challenging technical content into a compelling narrative that is enjoyable to listen to. There is something about space that appeals to everyone from the sense of adventure to the new technological frontiers,” said Jon Young, CEO of Reby Media. “Working with partners like Fugro is helping us to find the stories that no one else is telling. Positioning satellites in new space is a really great example of that.”

Starting as an independent production in June 2018 Engineering Matters has built a strong listener base of over 40,000 regular listeners per episode. The team has produced 218 episodes and partnered with some of the world’s leading engineering organisations to tell stories about engineering that is solving the world’s biggest challenges. These include the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Atkins, Autodesk, Bentley, Fugro, Mott MacDonald, WSP and many more.

Engineering Matters award winning team has won the Publisher Podcast Award’s Best Technology Podcast for 2021, 2022 and 2023 and is a recipient of the Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Public Engagement Award in 2020. It has also launched a range of other related podcasts including How to Build a Railway for the world’s biggest railway project HS2 and the popular Planet Beyond podcast by Fugro.
