UK blows past wind energy milestone

British wind power generated more than 20GW for first time last week. The rate needed to be achieved for a benchmark 30-minute period, which took place between noon and 12.30 on 2 November. Generation reached 20.896GW and supplied 53% of Britain’s energy.

It was the second time in the space of a week of windy weather that the record was broken.

According to industry body Renewable UK, wind generated 55% of our electricity over the course of that day. National Grid ESO noted that more than 70% of Britain’s electricity was provided by low carbon sources overall.

Although the latest statistics represent a new electricity generation record, the highest percentage of electricity generated from wind in a half-hour period is 64% on 29 January 2022, according to Renewable UK.
