3D printed concrete staircase built in Scotland

A new pedestrian and cycle bridge being built across the M8 in Glasgow now features 3D printed concrete steps. This is the largest 3D printed concrete structure ever built in the UK.

Printing the concrete steps allows for them to be constructed in a highly controlled environment, removing potential issues with constructing them in bad weather and reducing the risks that come with on-site construction.

3D printing also reduces wasted materials by 40% compared to traditional construction methods, this both reduces cost and carbon emissions.

Ian Steele, BAM Contracts Manager for the M8 Footbridge said: “It’s wonderful to see these 3D Concrete printed aspects installed as this iconic bridge takes shape. The printed element saw us manufacture the stairwells offsite, creating strong, one-of-a-kind structures, all while reducing waste and interaction with weather and other elements which can create hold ups.

The steps were printed by in a factory in the Netherlands before being shipped to Scotland. BAM had previously worked with the same concrete printing company to build the world’s longest 3D printed concrete bridge in Nijmegen, Netherlands in 2019. Once the installation of the concrete steps is fully complete they will be clad in granite to create a long lasting and slip free finish
