Porsche develops noise-quieting glass

New window designs from Porsche can reduce external noise when driving.

According to Porsche this technology can reduce external noise by 7.3% in the specified range (between 630 hertz and 6.3 kilohertz).

The windows consist of two outer glass panes, and three inner panes of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film. The (PVB) filters the majority of general road traffic such as other vehicles and tunnel echo.

Crucially, the volume of emergency vehicle sirens is not affected as the frequency they are set to falls outside the range of noise reduction in the windows.

The design is intended to increase driver comfort and enhance the driving experience, adding to the luxurious nature of the high-performance sport vehicles.

Additionally, the layers of film assist in withstanding break-in attempts and improve thermal insulation, making the car harder to steal and more energy efficient.

Despite the addition of extra layers and features, this glass is actually lighter-weight than the standard vehicle window so should not have any adverse effects on speed or efficiency.
