Houseplant health sensors gain popularity

Sensors that monitor the health and condition of a plant have become more popular, with one company in particular seeing the sales of their device treble in the space of a year.

According to an article on BBC News, Greensens, a company that produces these devices, saw €46,000 ($51,500) worth of sales in 2021; that is three times more profit than the company accumulated back in 2020.

With Greensens’ device in particular, it has the capability to link to an app that can be accessed by a smartphone. It is placed in the soil and in real time is able to show a user as to whether a plant is receiving the right amount of water and sunlight.

“The problem in having plants is the same as with a pet, you really need a little knowledge about plant health to take care of them,” says Stanislav Shults, founder of Greensens.

The app signifies the condition of a plant courtesy of an emoji traffic light system. If a green smiley is shown, then there’s no need to worry. However, a red smiley indicates that the plant may not be in the best of states.

“It gives me the opportunity to monitor…and now my plants look healthy,” says Jasmin Moeller, a user of the Greensens device. “They give me a good feeling. It is like having nature and a calm place at home.”
