A Scottish light technology firm will be supplying the US military with its very own optical wireless communication system as part of a multi-million dollar deal.
PureLiFi, who are based in Edinburgh, produce the Kitefin Li-Fi system – a piece of technology and a method of communication that enables secure data transmission via the harnessing of the light spectrum as opposed to radio frequencies.
After an initial pilot of the system back in 2019, pureLifi have said that the Kitefin system will be deployed in ‘real tactical and strategic environments’, with the deal with the US Army Europe and Africa being described as ‘an inflection point in the adoption of li-fi technology’.
“If one of the most significant and advanced Defense organisations in the world can rely on LiFi for the most critical of communications, LiFi can offer unprecedented benefits to the consumer,” said Alistair Banham, Chief Executive of pureLiFi.
“This first major deployment with the US Army Europe and Africa is just the beginning.”
According to an article on BBC News, this is the very first large-scale distribution of this technology, with $4.2m (£3m) having been invested into its deployment.
