Depending on certification, the delivery company UPS are planning to transport their parcels via electric VTOL aircraft from 2024 onwards.

According to an article on New Atlas, the multinational delivery company have struck a deal for the use of up to 150 eVTOL aircraft with Beta Technologies – an American aircraft manufacturer based in Vermont.

To fulfil the potential of this service, UPS are aiming to build designated pads for the VTOL aircraft at selected depots along with the implementation of charging equipment. 

Beta Technologies have claimed that their prototype Alia-250c aircraft can reach cruise speeds of up to approximately 170mph (270km/h) and that it is able to be fully charged in just 50 minutes.

“This is all about innovation with a focus on returns for our business, our customers, and the environment,” says Juan Perez, who is the UPS Chief Information and Engineering Officer.

“These new aircraft will create operational efficiencies in our business, open possibilities for new services, and serve as a foundation for future solutions to reduce the emissions profile of our air and ground operation.”
