Plans have been unveiled for a sustainable city to be built on Mars.
Architectural firm ABIBOO has produced the designs for this proposed city in answer to research carried out by The Mars Society and an international team of scientists and academics – the Sustainable Offworld Network (SONet).
According to an article on euro news, the design incorporates a network of five different cities altogether, with Nüwa being the capital city. To ensure the safety of the city’s inhabitants from radiation and atmospheric pressure, homes, offices and green spaces will be built into the side of one of the planet’s cliffs.
“We had to do a lot of analysis based on computing and working with the scientists to try to understand what are the circumstances that we will face, we have to face challenges that are very specific to the conditions of Mars, one of them is gravity, which is only one-third of the gravity on Earth,” says Alfredo Muñoz, who is the founder of ABIBOO.
Muñoz and ABIBOO believe that the city’s construction could start in 2054, with a view to it finishing in 2100.
“We think it is doable from the technical aspects. [What takes time] is more about ensuring that there is enough will and associations in the international community. This has to be something that comes from a private sector, public sector, different locations, different cultures, in order to ensure that there is diversity,” said Muñoz.
