E-Scooter Trial Begins in Southampton

A trial has begun in Southampton where e-scooters have been made available for hire.

In an integrated approach and in a bid to tackle climate change in the city, this trial sees five docking stations hosting fifty of the electric-powered scooters, with them being made available for rent between the hours of 06:00 and 22:00.

According to an article on BBC News, the e-scooters have a top speed of 10mph, though users must either have a provisional or full driving license and also be over the age of 18 years old.

By unlocking the e-scooter at a cost of £1, the user is then charged 14p per minute of usage. Subscription-based offers are also available from the suppliers of the scooters – Voi Technology.

Until the end of the coronavirus lockdown, NHS and emergency workers will be able to utilise the e-scooters free of charge.

“We are pleased to be part of this national trial working with key stakeholders and the residents of Southampton to understand how we can make the best use of this mode of transport now and in the future. The trial will help to keep the city moving as we start to emerge from the pandemic, while also supporting our Green City Plan to tackle climate change by offering greener and healthier alternatives to the car”, said Cllr Steve Leggett, who is a Cabinet member for Green City and Place for Southampton City Council.
