A device has been created that is able to beam audio into a user’s ears.
Produced by Noveto Systems, the SoundBeamer creates a bubble of sound that only you can hear. What makes this invention even more impressive is that the implementation of headphones is not needed.
According to an article on Associated Press, sound pockets are created around the proximity of the user’s ears by a 3D sensing module. The module pinpoints the positioning and location of the ears of the user. Once this has been achieved, the chosen audio can then be beamed into the listener’s ears via ultrasonic waves.
In addition, the sound pockets are exclusive to the spatial vicinity of the user, meaning that other individuals in a room are immune from being disturbed.
“This is what we dream of. A world where we get the sound you want. You don’t need to disturb others and others don’t get disturbed by your sound. But you can still interact with them.”, said Ayana Wallwater, who is the SoundBeamer Product Manager.
“You don’t believe it because it sounds like a speaker, but no one else can hear it…it’s supporting you and you’re in the middle of everything. It’s happening around you.”
CEO of Noveto Systems Christophe Ramstein has compared this invention to other breakthroughs in listener experience that we have witnessed so far in the 21st century.
“You know, I was trying to think how we compare sound beaming with any other inventions in history. And I think the only one that came to mind is… the first time I tried the iPod I was like, ‘Oh, my God. What’s that?’ I think sound beaming is something that is as disruptive as that”, says Ramstein.
It is hoped that the device will be released to the public by Christmas 2021.
