Researchers produce bacteria-destroying air filters

Researchers have developed air filters that have the capability to eliminate bacteria and viruses such as COVID-19.

According to an article by The Engineer, the air filters – which have been produced by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel in collaboration with Rice University in Houston, Texas – contain laser-induced graphene. Whether it be mould spores, viruses or bacteria, the organic particles are destroyed the moment it makes contact with the graphene. 

The filters are being commercialised by LIGC Application whilst also being funded by Hubei Forbon Technology Co.

“When an airborne bacteria or virus touches the graphene surface, it is shocked at a low voltage and currents that are safe for use, said Yehuda Borenstein, who is the CEO of LIGC. 

As well as providing cleaner air, the filters will use significantly less energy than other air filters such as fibre HEPA filters that are used on aircraft for example. 

‘While 2020 has highlighted the importance of protecting against airborne viruses, the post-pandemic world will likely show us how important it is to do so without increasing energy costs past the point of affordability,” said Borenstein.
