A Silicon Valley-based brand have produced what they claim is the world’s first 3D-printed bicycle.

Superstrata, which is a new bicycle brand of additive manufacturing startup Arevo, have launched two 3D-printed carbon models – the Ion e-bike and the Terra road bike. The Ion e-bike has a rear-hub 250W motor and a 252Wh bat-tery, whereas the Terra has a claimed frame weight of just 1300g and can be custom-built to fit a rider’s style and needs.

According to The Verge the frames for each of the models are made up of uni-body thermoplastic carbon fibre. This is where the frame is manufactured as one flowing and continuous piece. Superstrata say that this design feature make the bikes ‘extremely impact resistant, yet remarkably lightweight’.‘

This bike was designed to leverage all the benefits of this new manufacturing technology to get the best of both worlds: strength and lightness,’ said Bill Stephens, the designer behind Superstrata and an award-winning bicycle de-signer.

Both models are available in both black or white finishes, with the delivery of the first production round of bikes due to be released in December 2020.
