Extreme E-Racing Receives Hydrogen Boost

For its inaugural season in 2021, the Extreme E racing championship will introduce zero emissions charging for its electric vehicles.

In a collaboration with AFC Energy, the H-Power charger will use hydrogen to fuel each of the vehicles as opposed to diesel generators. Extreme E’s website states that the series will ‘highlight climate change challenges faced by different ecosystems, whilst showcasing the performance of all-electric SUVs in extreme conditions’.

To save the need to store and transport hydrogen to different race meetings, the hydrogen power solution will demonstrate the remote manufacture of so-called ‘green hydrogen’ through micro-alkaline water electrolysis.

“This collaboration with AFC Energy is a game changer not just for Extreme E, but also to the wider sports and events industry which could also benefit greatly from using this innovative, zero emission charging technology,” said Formula E founder Alejandro Agag.

“Our collaboration with AFC Energy, the leading provider of alkaline fuel cell systems providing off-grid and sustainable power generation, is a huge step in the right direction to transforming motorsport into a modern and green pastime.”

The series is set to take place over five different locations between January and October next year. These include the Amazon rainforest, the Russell glacier in Greenland and the Kali Gandaki Gorge in Nepal.
