SpaceX shoots for offshore launch capability

With a tweet and a job posting, private launch company SpaceX announced it will move towards an offshore launch capability.

Owner Elon Musk recently tweeted that the company was looking for offshore operations engineers in Texas to facilitate the construction of a series of “floating superheavy-class spaceports”.

The floating launch and landing platforms will be for the company’s 120m-high, 5,000t Starship, specifically its first stage ‘Super Heavy’ rocket, which is still in development (prototype pictured, ©SpaceX). The launches and landings of this future mega rocket are, according to Musk ‘not subtle’.

Space.com has published an article with further analysis of this development.
